Are you Special enough to join our team? Specials are vital members of the Suffolk Police family and the latest statistics show their contribution is above the national average. A national benchmarking exercise undertaken by the College of Policing has highlighted that Suffolk Police Specials’ numbers and contributions (the time spent serving their community) sit in the top 25% compared with trends across the country. The benchmarking also highlighted that most Specials join up in their early 20s, although Suffolk has Specials in their 40s, 50s and even a few in their 60s. This varied and welcome age profile of our volunteer officers means our county benefits from a vast range of experience as well. Although numbers are down, this is the case across the country and reflects the fact that many Specials go on to become regular police officers. Suffolk Constabulary is actively looking at ways to recruit more Specials of all ages and to encourage them to remain in the role for longer. We are also looking for more female applicants to match the rise in female regular officers. Suffolk has recently launched a new recruitment campaign and new recruitment video which gives a greater understanding of the varied and interesting role of a Special Constable and also explains the training and vast experience Suffolk Specials gain. Police and Crime Commissioner for Suffolk Tim Passmore said: “We are very fortunate to have an excellent Special Constabulary here in Suffolk working with our regular officers across the county. The contribution made to policing by our volunteer officers is absolutely remarkable. The incredible number of hours worked demonstrates their unstinting commitment and as Police and Crime Commissioner and on behalf of the public I have nothing but praise and admiration for all they do. I’d also like to thank the many employers who support their employees by giving extra leave to accommodate their policing duties, this support is greatly appreciated.”
