Rogue trader on the run: After multiple broken promises that he will hand himself in we are urging this £765,000 fraudster to give himself up for sentencing. Wayne Parker has been on the run since February after being found guilty of fraudulent trading. Wayne Parker, of Mildenhall, was found guilty in October 2022 of obtaining more than £765,000 in credit from suppliers. He presented himself as a livestock owner which enabled him to be given credit by a wide range of companies. He often made no attempt to settle his debts and, when he did, repeatedly sent cheques that would bounce. An arrest warrant was issued when he failed to appear in court in February 2023. Since going on the run Mr Parker is known to have been using the Match.com dating website and has also been hiring cars in a bid, it is believed, to avoid detection by the police. He has links to west London, with his last known address being in Feltham, however he has carried out work across Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, and Surrey. Recent intelligence suggests that he may also be working in Wales and there are links to him being in Somerset. Graham Crisp, Head of Suffolk Trading Standards, said: “Mr Parker has repeatedly said he would return to Suffolk to face the consequences of his actions but, so far, he has failed to do so. “He knows it is only a matter of time before the law catches up with him and we would strongly urge him to hand himself in sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we would ask anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to contact us.” Anyone who has seen Mr Parker or knows of his current whereabouts should contact Suffolk Trading Standards via email on tradingstandards@suffolk.gov.uk
Slush-ice drinks: The Food Standards Agency (FSA) have issued new industry guidance on glycerol in slush-ice drinks. They are advising that slush-ice drinks should not be sold to children four years of age and under and that free refill promotions should not be offered to under-10s. This is to prevent young children from being exposed to excessive amounts of glycerol, which is used as a substitute for sugar to create the slush effect in these drinks. The updated guidance follows an FSA risk assessment which found that children below this age may suffer from headaches and sickness caused by exposure to glycerol. The FSA is also aware of two cases in Scotland, one in 2021 and one in 2022, where children were hospitalised because of glycerol intoxication. At very high levels of exposure – typically when several of these products are drunk by a child in a short space of time – glycerol intoxication could cause shock, hypoglycaemia and loss of consciousness. While the symptoms of glycerol intoxication are usually mild, it is important that parents are aware of the risks – particularly at high levels of consumption. It is likely that there is under-reporting of glycerol intoxication, as parents may attribute nausea and headaches to other factors.
Magnet danger: The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is urging consumers to be aware of the dangers posed by certain magnetic reusable water balloons. The warning comes after OPSS identified reusable water balloons that present a risk of death or serious injury if two or more magnets are ingested. OPSS investigations revealed some magnetic reusable water balloons being sold, via online marketplaces, have accessible magnets that have a higher magnetic force (flux) than is allowed. All magnets have the potential to be dangerous when swallowed, as they can cause serious internal injuries and death.
Consumers
- If you possess reusable water balloons with accessible magnets, stop using the products and dispose of them safely, keeping them away from children.
- Be aware of signs that could indicate accidental ingestion in children, like vomiting and stomach pain.
- Seek immediate medical attention if you believe a magnet has been swallowed.
- Contact the seller you purchased the product from, as you may be entitled to a refund under consumer protection regulations.
Businesses
- Must comply with their obligations under product safety law.
- Must remove from the market reusable water balloons containing accessible small magnets that exceed the magnetic flux index set in Standard EN71, or which otherwise breach the safety requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.
- Must take all reasonable precautions to minimise risk and demonstrate due diligence, e.g. by performing risk assessments.
- Must ensure that clear warnings are included with any products that contain magnets, where there is a risk of ingestion.
