Police have arrested five people after a cannabis factory was discovered at Kenton near Debenham. Following information received on Friday 30 December officers from the east Kestrel team attended a property on Webbs Road at Kenton. Nearby at the property, they stopped a vehicle and arrested a male on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis. Following further enquiries officers entered the address and located four other males inside the property. Police discovered three rooms all containing cannabis plants. It is estimated there were up to 1,000 plants contained in the premises. A 38-year-old was arrested on suspicion on cultivation of cannabis, suspicion of abstracting electricity and suspicion of possession of a bladed weapon; two 30-year-olds, a 24-year-old, and a 51-year-old were all arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis. All five suspects were taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. They were released on police bail to answer on Thursday 31 March, pending further enquiries. The east Kestrel team is one of three such teams across the county dedicated to tackle criminal threats and challenges that emerge in a particular local area. The teams also support community and local policing priorities through community engagement and dealing with anti-social behaviour. Sgt Kelvin Wenden from the Kestrel team said: “This is by far the largest cannabis factory I have seen in my 13-year career and I know this will be a major blow to serious and organised crime. We will not stop in our pursuit in bringing criminals to justice, and serious hauls like this ensure that criminals need to keep looking over their shoulders knowing that Suffolk police will be hot on their tails.” Anyone who knows anything about this incident or has seen any suspicious behaviour in the area leading up to the discovery should contact Lowestoft CID, quoting crime number 37/81718/22

The signs to spot of a cannabis factory include a strong or sickly-sweet smell in the air; buildings with windows constantly blocked off; high levels of heat and condensation and the constant buzz of ventilation. Such operations would most likely have people coming and going from an address at unsociable hours too. If you suspect drug dealing is taking place in your area or see anything suspicious or out of place, please tell us. You don’t have to be certain, just concerned. Call police on 101, or alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers to report anonymously – either online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling 0800 555 111.
