Suffolk Police are urging people to celebrate safely this weekend as various fireworks and bonfire events take place. Whether you are celebrating privately or at organised events do bear in mind that some members of the community do have extra concerns at this time of year. The vast majority of people celebrate responsibly and safely and the police certainly do not want to spoil anyone’s fun. But officers will be out and about to help people feel safe and protected. You can also play your part in keeping our communities safe by reporting any information about any non-emergency incident via report-crime-online instead of calling 101. Supt Kerry Cutler said: “Please call 999 in an emergency for that is what it is there for. But making good use of the online facility when there is not the need for an urgent response helps to free up our control room staff for real emergencies. That way we can be of even more help to people who need it quickly. Halloween showed just how busy our controllers can be. On 31 October, they received 475 emergency calls before 9pm and a further 304 101 non-emergency calls. This shows the demand on our resources can be even higher at this time of year and while most people who require police assistance use the emergency number correctly, every unnecessary call has an impact on our ability to help those who are vulnerable. Calls to the 999 number should only be used for situations where a crime is actually in progress or someone is in danger.”
