The wettest April in 100 years has claimed a casualty with a weekend of events planned for the Red Feather Club in Horham cancelled.
The open days over the weekend of May 13 have had to be cancelled by the 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association as the recent downpours mean the land used as a public car park is saturated.
95th Bomb Group Heritage Association chairman James Mutton said: “It is one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make. Many people look forward to our Grand Open Day weekend but with the fields saturated and no end to the rain in sight we had to come to a decision.
"People travel here from all over the UK and it wouldn’t be fair on them to cancel at the last minute. With the way things are there is just no way we can use the land for parking – it is just saturated.”
World War Two veterans are among a 30-strong group of Americans visiting the small Suffolk village for their annual reunion in May. Although the public events have been cancelled the American visitors – including two veterans who were based at Horham during World War Two with the 95th Bomb Group – will still be entertained and hosted by villagers and members of the association.
James added: “We hope everyone will understand and we do have a further seven open days throughout the year for the public to come along and enjoy the Red Feather Club.”
Further open days are on: Sunday May 27th; Saturday June 9th (in conjunction with Horham Bygone Country Rally); Sunday June 24th; Sunday July 29th; Sunday August 26th; Sunday September 30th; and Sunday October 28th.
The award-winning Red Feather Club is at Horham, Suffolk (IP21 5DG), four miles south-east of Eye. It offers a unique experience in a 1940s WW2 NCOs’ social club and visitors say it is like “going back in time”. The museum houses only 95th Bomb Group items such as uniforms, photographs and memorabilia. Regular open days are held on the last Sunday of every month during the summer (May to October inclusive 10am-4pm). Membership of the 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association is £8 a year.
